If you've ever shot a gun in your life you would not ask that question. It's loud. Really loud. In fact, if you fire just a common caliber pistol in an average size bedroom, permanent hearing damage is not out of the question. Why should anyone have to suffer permanent hearing loss because they were defending themselves in their own homes? That's a ludicrous burden to put on the everyday citizen because a small minority of violent criminals exist.

They bring the noise down to more easily-mitigated levels. Almost all rounds (bullet sizes to you nogunz) when fired through a silencer are sill at levels that cause permanent hearing damage. Just less so. Now think about how loud they are without the silencer.
If the Senators, who know full well that they're lying fucks, believe silencers prevent gunshots from being heard, let them volunteer to sit next to an AR with a silencer being fired, while wearing no hearing protection. If they won't be honest, at least they can be disabled.

I had a neighbor a few houses down shoot so much one year that it started to piss me off. I am a staunch 2nd amendment supporter but there is a line that neighbor crossed, first time I got irritated by a neighbor shooting. Anyone shooting that often should probably use suppressors.

Hunting - theyre not as loud so dont startle as much game in surrounding areas. This is a nice gesture to other hunters as it helps keep the game in the area so everyone gets a chance.

Target shooting - much less hearing damage. Yes, hearing protection exists and most rifle cartridges are still supersonic after a suppressor, which creates a sonic boom that kills your ears. The plink plink is just subsonic 22lr firearms or 45acp firearms.

Defense purposes - no need to wake everyone up when dispatching miscreants.

Tactical reasons - harder for targets to track combatants during skirmishes..

I was in the Army and I had an M16. But I also had to shoot the M2 50 cal machine gun on convoys. One time we were being attacked so while shooting the M2 my hearing plugs fell out while firing. I had to keep firing that bitch until they died because its not like I could yell out to the enemy and say “time out! I got to put my ear plugs back in!”
