Sexual liberalism makes it impossible for men to cooperate at scale. Tribes in which men can't cooperate at scale are weak. Without monogamy, marriage customs, sexual taboos etc the men in your own tribe become a bigger threat than other tribes.
Polygynous cultures are only stable so long as they have plenty of weak enemies to conquer for war brides. Once all the weak neighbors have been conquered, polygaynous societies always descend into infighting (since this is the only way for men to get a wife) and either implode or transition to monogamy in an attempt to prevent the collapse. This is a huge part of why islam experienced explosive growth in its early years, but then ultimately stagnated while christianity continued developing, and also why much of the islamic world became monogamous in practice even if islam permits polygyny in principle.
