People, in the US have a hard time to comprehend that things like civil war or a dictatorship might happen there, too.
And they do see the stepps progressing to that end.
But: Such things usually only happen in 3rd world countries, not in the land of the free, the oldest democracy in the world.
Thus, if they do happen in the US they are not the real thing. And so nothing ever happens until they wonder how the hell they got into this mess.

I love snow.
Back in the days, when I was a kid, my region would be covered in so much snow, I would randomly just jump face first on the ground, there was snow up to my knees so it didn't hurt.
