It's the endless appeal of the strongman aesthetic; no matter the problem, just being able to say "they wouldn't do this shit if our based psycho were in office" provides support against the leadership in power. The narrative is complicated, the truth even more so. Critique is simple and from that place of low expectations, there is more permission given. Trump gets more leeway and spin because he doesn't have that same set of standards and expectations establishment dems have.

But it's also the liar and the expectation placed on them. The establishment dems are meant to prove the effectiveness of government and representation, meaning lies and failures have greater consequences to them as they carry the faith in a system that the right and center's libertarian sensibilities oppose. The GOP going with Trump brings catharsis in that if he fucks up government, if he weakens it, that's actually good for billionaires and the anti-establishment types. If he lies and brings chaos, it's all just trolling. There is no real standard Trump is held to.
