It will be the second one until we have human-eating terminators running on biofuel.

In a world war it would likely be a mix of both.
Depending on the environment conventional warfare would maintain superiority, while in other environments drones and AI would be superior tactics.
If we head into WW3 it will definitely be interesting how environments affect which war philosophy is used in each individual war theater.
I unironically have a huge boner for WW3 and the innovation that will come from the conflict.
