The video was not defeatist at all the way you make it sound, it was actually showing that it's more possible than people realize. His end goal is to have the product be 100% US made but there are still a few components that came from overseas in the initial run, namely the knob which came from Costa Rica (it was supposed to be from the US), and the chainmail (which was supposed to come from India but actually came from China).
If the military has any interest in seeing this project succeed it's that the military is required by law to source all their stuff from US manufacturers, and there aren't very many left, which means the military finds itself with fewer and fewer companies who can bid for contracts, which in turn means more expense to the tax payer and less potential for innovation through competition, both of which are bad for the country.
In general, we need more manufacturing infrastructure security, and it translates to more good paying jobs with less IP theft from China. Case in point, Warhammer is fucking expensive, and it's because all the models have to be made in the UK from Games Workshop's own factory. It doesn't just provide jobs to American workers but it also means Amazon doesn't get flooded with unauthorized product that they don't make a cent of profit off of, which is what happens with pretty much everything that gets made in China that's worth bootlegging.
