Iran was vastly better than ISIS in Syria, but Iran still grossly abused and exploited the civil war in Syria against Sunnis, Arabs, Druze, Alawites and others, to a far too extreme degree. Bashir al-Assad was grossly incompetent, way less competent and responsible than his father. Was Bashir's mother of low aptitude and ability, or was it just Bashir himself, or something else? Hafez at one point tried to install Sunni Arab generals as the leaders in Syria or something to that effect. And Bashir was not the first choice for successor, but the brother chosen as the successor died IIRC. Bashir may also have been tilted due to the massacres against Alawites committed by Sunni Islamists, but his actions speak far more towards gross incompetence than evil as far as I can tell. The most evil thing he might have done is failing to decades ago finding a successor that was more competent, responsible and benign than himself (could for instance have appointed a Sunni Arab successor, maybe from his wife's family), though that is easier said than done, his father Hafez did not have an easy time regarding power change and succession, and Bashir was apparently way less competent than his father.
Iran, while tilted, should have shown far greater restraint in Syria. And while Israel is extremely wrong in its actions against Iran, Iran has in the past shot itself in the foot to the extreme.
