This is 100% a humiliation ritual and I guarantee that the other employees were pestering him to climb in there and do it. In shitty wagie jobs like that your fellow employees (especially sadistic older guys) will try to get you to hurt/harm/humiliate yourself as an amusement to shit test you. My fourth day on the job at a company that warehoused roofing supplies my coworkers tried to get me to climb onto a tall stack of material to pick up shit stacked up behind it against the wall because he didn't want to get the lift and move the first stack out of the way. When I told him I wasn't doing that until he did his job he started huffing and bitching and saying he was going to get me fired (he was also a basic warehouse laborer and made the same as me). Never give your fellow employees the benefit of the doubt. They hate you and want you to suffer and die for their amusement.
