I am religious myself and am trying to learn more about Christ and the Bible. I have started reading the NT and listen to an audio book at night sometimes to drift off to. Have you tried writing a novel? It doesn't have to be for publishing, but you could try to writie one, and use it to work through and deal with your negative thoughts. For instance, a guy with unrequited feelings works through the trauma and heartache of a loved one's death, meanwhile he befriends other people, and finds solace in listening to and being friendly to them. That's his hero's journey is realizing that courage and internql strength are things gained by being patient with others and takong an interest in their thoughts and problems. Try to write it as a short story, and save it. Then start filling in extra scenes and put them in where you think they will work. Don't discard anything you write, and try to sew the story together. It will take you 12-36 months to write a full 200 page novel with a coherent theme, and voice. You might find that very cathartic.
