For most of history, self - preservation was the motivation for fighting for your country. All morals are based on necessity. If people got taken over, then at least the male line would be exterminated. By fighting, even if you lost your life, then perhaps your family could leave. In modern times when you can take your family and leave, it's not quite the same. But still not everyone can do that.
