I would guess that hotels plan to make a certain amount of breakfast food per day, and they calculate that into their typical expenses. If they do that then they probably don't care about what happens to the food, whether it gets eaten by a guest or eaten by some bum off the street or they throw it out after breakfast ends probably doesn't matter much to them.

You're not going to be aware of everyone that goes in and out, especially if you work overnight shifts where 99% of the people will be in and asleep already. Some guy may go out a side door to smoke, whatever.

But you do kind of get an idea of when somoene is and isn't a guest if you observe people long enough through body language and stuff like that. Non-guests tend to look around more because they don't know the place and they're getting a feel for it. They move slower and more cautiously. Guests have a more confident way o moving because they know they're supposed to be there. Also, most people aren't going to come right in from outside and go to breakfast that early. They're coming down from their rooms, usually if they come in it's from walking their dog or jogging or something so they usually go back up first. The people who keep doing it, you pretty much can tell they're not a guess by maybe the second time they try and at that point you ask them if they're a guest, ask for their room number/name and tell them to get lost when they give you obviously bullshit stuff.

Some people won’t even book hotels that don’t have “free” breakfasts, and they routinely throw shit fits if its not as promised or its not out in time. You can get a better breakfast at McDonalds for $10, and chances are there is one 5 minutes from your hotel. The whole thing is just a gimmick to get you out the room early.

I accidentally did that at my hotel a few weeks ago. They charged for breakfast unless you had a higher teir room. I was so tired and groggy that i didn't realize i had to pay. Strolled in, grabbed the mediocre scrambled eggs and potatoes, ate, cleaned up and left. I only realized it when going back for breakfast for the following day.

To be fair, there was an entire team of NAACP womans college basketball and their families there, all eating because they prepaid for the meals.

I've learned to crank that thing to max in the daytime to get the room nice and cold, then turn it off before bed. Usually the room doesn't warm up until morning. Those things also tend to just fucking blast you with dry ass air, which gets super uncomfortable.

Also get a double bed room and sleep in the bed furthest from the AC.

When I worked at a hotel, I very quickly learned to tell anyone calling after like 1 AM from a local number that we were sold out. Every single time it was someone melanated who wanted to use the hotel to sell drugs/fuck hookers or if it was a woman they were the hooker looking for a place to bring a john. They always wanted to pay in cash or use Apple Pay or whatever so they could also trash the room and then we wouldn't be able to get fees for damages from them.
