Honestly the elites deserve all of the power they have. The fact that the average person uses pageants like this to gauge military might as opposed to any substantive metric just illustrates to me that the common person should be ruled with little recourse. The PLA for a time thought that military was about marching and singing songs. Then they tried this in Vietnam when they wanted to help the US out and they retreated within 2 weeks. It was an okay first attempt and did a good job showcasing american capabilities and failures on the cheap.

Washington is also just an awful place for doing parades of this kind, since it's a bureaucratic shithole with no connection to anything. But it's not like the US has many options when it comes to large parks, squares and overall public infrastructure.
