Have any of you heard about Russian Cosmism? It's a fascinating philosophical and cultural movement that emerged in Russia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Unlike most Western philosophies, it combines elements of science, religion, and art, focusing on humanity's role in the cosmos and the possibility of achieving immortality.

Key points of Russian Cosmism include:
- **Immortality and Resurrection**: The belief that through scientific advancement, humans could achieve physical immortality and even resurrect the dead.
- **Space Exploration**: Long before the Space Age, Cosmists envisioned human colonization of space as a necessary step for the survival and evolution of humanity.
- **Unity of Knowledge**: It promotes an integrated approach to knowledge, merging science, art, and spirituality into a cohesive worldview.

Notable figures include:
- **Nikolai Fedorov**: Often considered the father of Russian Cosmism, he believed in the "common task" of resurrecting all ancestors and achieving universal salvation.
- **Konstantin Tsiolkovsky**: A pioneer of astronautic theory who saw space exploration as a means to ensure the survival of the human race.
- **Alexander Chizhevsky**: A biophysicist who studied the influence of cosmic factors on human behavior and history.

Despite its obscurity, Russian Cosmism has influenced Soviet space programs and various cultural works. It’s a blend of utopian dreams, rigorous science, and deep spirituality that’s worth exploring.

That sounds scary and reminds me of We by Yevgeny Zamyatin.
The fact that the book cover looks very focused on "rationality" and artificiality.
Hard pass on that part of the philosophy.

Tsiolkovsky is based and the famous person, but I've never heard about the other ones including this "cosmism" thing in general.

Probably the same shit like "maskirovka" when the Westerners dig some regular Russian word out, append "Russian" and give the whole construction a new special meaning.

It was relatively popular in late USSR. I have an old soviet book about noosphere lying around somewhere. But of course as with everything intellectual no one cares about it in brave new Russia.

I was an avid reader of the late Soviet sci-fi literature and still have never heard of this cosmism thing. So not sure if there are more than 1 person heard about it.

Care to elaborate?
It feels so weird that a recent superpower with focus on natural science and rationality would fall from grace like that.
Are people simply too poor/busy to care right now or is the spark gone for good?

Okay, I did read this cosmism thing now and now understand why its ideas are somewhat familiar to me yet completely unknown by the therm "cosmism".

Tsiolkovskiy's ideas (and totally unfamous other philosophers) were fully integrated into the Soviet and Russian cultures (in this exact sequence) and indeed heavily influenced our culture and sci-fi literature to the point that during few generations kids always wanted to become a cosmonaut. It's just totally unknown as a separate thing with the own name.

So the things like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE8vnsH8_K8 or sovietwave turned out to be outcomes of the Russian cosmism as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMoCM_FgLP8

That was a useful thread. Not often a foreigner can teach me something about my own culture.

It was just Soviet occultism, basically to Western esotericism what Soviet Communism was to liberal-Progressivism.

Imagine what a hellish existence we would have if we resurrected the dead just to cram all of us together in shitty tin cans on Mars or whatever.

They were counting on infinite planets to settle. Even with African birthrate, you wouldn't mind more people, when you have infinity to settle and no robots to help.

i don't think people will colonize earth 2 without colonizing mars or Europa (moon) first. And that probably won't be colonized unless the moon is colonized. And "colonizing" here means some form of shelter, probably underground, that people can stay sane inside of while surviving a missing outbound flight
