>>507500260I’ve heard many times an argument that smokers are cheaper for a socialized medical system because they die earlier and don’t need as many years of care; but on the flip side treating lung cancer is also expensive and burdensome.
We need new drugs. It starts with accepting that a decent number of humans cannot be sober all the time or they will lose what sanity they possess, and then having the courage to actually forge some progress in making better alternatives.
What if we had a drug that made you feel almost as good as heroin, but didn’t really prevent you from being able to / wanting to work? What if we had a stimulant you could use with no negatives at all, stronger than coffee but without the major downsides of meth?
Whatever culture actually makes progress on this first will have a superpower. We are wasting all this time and energy trying to come up with highly targeted drugs for specific diseases and syndromes, but nothing to treat society voluntarily as a whole. Still stuck with booze…
