Missing a whole segment of 1978-79 and deposition of the Shah regime.

There were 2 (two) phases to the Iran revolution
>socialist
>islamic fundamentalist
Never mentioned or discussed on /pol/
It is a far more complex and multi faceted topic, those two years than merely "Khomeini took over." (or "they turned to cleric Khomeini" = OP)

>70 years ago, Iran looked just like any Western country.
No, young people in Tehran were pretty secular(as they still are now) vast swaths of religious conservatives in the countryside obviously weren't
>They install the Shah, a brutal US-backed dictator.
The Shah oversaw a pretty well executed modernization of Iran, infrastructure, education, womens rights(this is where le secular persia photos stem from)
Ironically it was this modernization and betterment of the Iranian people's quality of life which caused his downfall, these new university's churned out subhuman retarded leftists who joined hands with inbred Islamists(deja vu?) to topple the Shah. The tiny silverlining is of course that the Islamists co opted the movement right after and executed the lefties

Im not well read, but essentially the secular part of the movement was much more fractured, liberals, nationalists, communists etc all in agreement that the shah needs to go and be replaced with their specific ideology, que infighting(this also happened more recently with secular anti assad forces in Syria who ended up getting absorbed by Islamists. Islamists were much more homogenous, they were not spending time arguing with eachother over whether the state should be theocratic and implement sharia.
During the revolution the secularist factions did not yet realize how much wider the ideological chasm was between them and islamists as opposed to the difference between them and the Shah, this was due to a mixture of muslim taqiya and gullibleness on their part. While Khomeini was in Paris he was promising a democratic political system but when he consolidated power that obviously didn't happen.
A lot of these well educated secular Iranians ended up leaving and make up a huge part of the western diaspora, imagine living in the west looking at the continued degradation of your country all the while knowing you directly helped bring it about, tragic stuff

Yes good overview but was interested in more specifics of how "islamists co-opted" the movement.
You make good broader points of how they may ? have 1978-79 acted, interacted in aggregate but need more particulars of who the individual players were within each movement in Iran in 1977 and 1978. And how they wielded power, were influenced, paid, supported, who they communicated with.
There were western intelligence services at work. (Obviously, since the Pahlavi regime was of key importance to U.S./U.K.)
