You're thinking of this as a modern century where no one does land invasions/take overs, when in russias past 400 year history there have been countless attempts of take over, including from europe itself. The baltics acted as a great separation between russia and "proper" europe, as those positions are defendable. Now the current baltics where NATO is situated, it's all flat land and great landing spots to build an invasion force. If ukraine gets added to that, that's more than enough to march on moscow/saint petersburg. Now, I think that realistically in current times NATO wouldn't go invade east, but who knows what might happen next 100-200 years, where earth resources/land becomes more and more precious, and those frozen tundras that russia is currently filled with become habitable lands. What then?

Daily reminder that in the 19th century a bunch of French proto-geopolitical analysts wrote books about the coming Russian superpower that was industrializing, had basically an abundance of every natural resource, had the largest reserve of gold in the world and the fourth largest population (that today would be in the billion+). Russia basically won the game of geopolitics. And then, the German began social engineering Russia until you have what the Jewish boyar state today.

Europe hates Russia, wants to break it up and colonize it, and Russians now know this. The mask is off. The days of "le friendly European welfare continent that is the world's tourist attraction" are over. Nowadays all that Europeans and their elected politicians talk about is "Making Russia Small Again" (imperial conquest and dismantlement of the country), the need to rebuild European military power to aim at Russia etc.
Europe wants Russia destroyed and no one can un-see this fact now.
Russia needs to go into a full-blown war economy like under Stalin in the early 1940s and get ready to steamroll Europe.
