They're talking about missiles that can cruise and maneuver at those speeds, which is very advanced engineering.
Even the 1940s V-2 rocket was practically at hypersonic speed so it's not purely about burning a lot of propellant really fast.
All of Iran's ordinance seems to be quite dumb also, pretty much just Cold War tech.

It means they fly very high to limit drag and fly in almost perfectly straight lines. When they dip down deeper into the atmosphere they lose what little maneuverability they had. They are hard to intercept because they have limited engagement windows during mid course. On terminal approach they are a lot easier to engage but you need defenses right on top of the target to be effective.

Hypersonic missiles are an attempt to counter strong missile defenses in a cheaper manner than saturation, stealth or using nuclear weapons. Those methods was how the USSR was planning to counter the US missile defenses and so long as your enemy doesn't have lots of counter missile systems it works well enough to be better than other means.

Mach 5+ terminal phase and typically much higher in boost phase like mach 9. Ballistic missiles and supersonic cruise missiles are going only supersonic for terminal phase. Standard cruise missiles are moving in slo-mo comparatively. Extremely hard to intercept due to tiny window.

THAAD works but there isn't enough deployed to mount an effective defense against a large amount of them. THAAD also only works before it enters terminal phase, so while in space (80+ miles up) basically. once it is terminal they are extremely hard to stop.

When Israel was getting hit last night on Lookner's stream, I saw their interceptor rockets stop mid-flight after missing a target, then hone in on another in less than 3 seconds. That shit is crazier than any hypersonic footage I've seen so far. I don't know what kind of technology allows a missile to stop in mid flight, get a relock, and deviate that fast. I want it though. A shame to waste that technology on a shitty worthless piece of arid fuckhole known as Israel.

They are specifically designed to shatter like glass so even if they get intercepted they will continue to rain down at Mach 10, this is what makes them overpowered and no skill to use. Only noobs would want to use it.

When plebs speak about hypersonic missile they think it is all about speed. What militaries mean when they say hypersonic missile is unpredictable trajectories. It is literally high speed 3D chess that circumvents radar detection domes on a round earth with the missiles hiding behind the horizon until the last mile.
