Whats the strategy here? My guess is that its an corrupt commander sending them to deaths not giving a fuck just to report to the higher ups that they captured a field or did an attack on the enemy.

Oh it makes perfect sense. They were trying to push the "flag" forward.
Since so much of the battlefield is under surveillance at all times (drones, satellites, etc. everything is flatland)
So both sides send these probes. Fast-moving "flag carriers" that attempt to rush forward and dig in. Then if they were successful, they'll bring a few more squads along the same route

4. Sneak in a spotter for missile and airstrikes - give him a laser designator
5. The men in the truck are theives and lazy assholes and upset their unit enough to get this mission

The strategy is these guys probably didn't have motorbikes to spread out,

most assaults are done by small teams clearing out small trenches
