Thats how Irans nuclear program got started. They took the claim seriously and launched theoretical studies to gauge how far along the Iraqis were.

There are a gazillion articles still online from 2003, 04 ,05 etc.. saying Iran was weeks away from having nukes. They pushed it hard. Only the insurgency in Iraq and a wrecked economy prevented us from invading
