My understanding is that while drill routines are Napoleonic/Prussian in origin however military parades go back at least to Rome in the Triumph, as Anon pointed out. Fighting units throughout time have also had custom marches, steps and dance moves to impress on and off the battlefield. Examples of this include traditional sword-dances of many cultures.

this doesn't make it redeemable in any way but i think one of the reasons the parade looked so especially bad was how ordinary it looked, which is in stark contrast to how the US military is often depicted on a screen (cinematic, epic, etc) in advertisements and movies.
adding some exaggerated depth of field, some more military style dark color tinting, and slowing down the framerate, changes the feeling a bit to something slightly more ominous, but ends up looking overproduced since the actualy content itself is underwhelming and probably wouldn't have made sense to actually do any of this in practice since the parade just looked like some kid-friendly fun day, not an actual show of force

While its impressive it kind of goes passsed the point, the commies, like always are way to worried about the look of something working well than it actually working well. drill is supposed to be about a show of training, discipline. imo both the americans and chinese parades fail at this. with the americans it shows a lack of focus on training drill. which isnt necessarily bad, because it just shows a lack of training in drill. with the chinese it just shows that theyre bug slaves that can be whipped into a well performing drill formation. they probably practice drill intensly for months and months just for a grand show. which is the commies main problem, everything just needs to LOOK good, and it IS good. and this quite clearly shows in their parades. If the military can just look really good in their drill, it will give off an image of a very well trained, strong, united army. but this is just the image presented. Part of the reason drill was so effective is it could very quickly turn a low down theif into a one that more resembles a tall and proper soldier in a few weeks.

Marching in step in a straight fucking line is the simplest display of quality leadership and a well disciplined military. Even if their primary mos doesn't involve marching/band shit it should take them no more than a few days to get in step. It doesn't have to be fancy, they just have to not look like a bag of smashed assholes. That performance shows that they didn't prepare at all. This was an abject failure by army leadership.

well it depends on what their basline drill training is. for us in canada we would typycally drill once a week. and for a parade we would dedicate about a week to more regular(typically daily) drill practice, and the result would usually be pretty good. but it depends on the unit and commander there was no real mandate. some units wouldnt drill regularly at all and you would need weeks to bring them up to standard. i think its reflective on the unit commander moreso than the army itself. during the parade theire were plenty of units that had good drill, and a few stood out with their substandard drill. thats the bad thing about drill, is if you have only a few guys out of step then everyone looks bad. but its more a reflection on the smaller unit commanders

There were a few good performances, mainly the units/band that focus on D&C. It's not difficult to get the joes to march in a straight line though. The blame is fully on army leadership. It would appear most of the units didn't prepare at all and they weren't held accountable by leadership. If this is an indication of the quality of army leadership, then things aren't looking too good for the next war.

idk i look back on the parade and most units seem to be fairly in step, while some clearly didnt properly prepare it looks like most did. you also have to remember its very easy to march in step with cadence calls, or marching music, which is present in chinese parades for example. wheras in contrast there was no cadence calls in the us parade, and the music was not miltary marching music with a bpm set to the cadence they march at, this can make marching in step much more difficult. which is why they would have drummers for every company in the blackpowder era. imo the sergeants at the rear of the formation shouldve been shouting cadence calls.

When I was in juvie in the late-90s, we marched 3 miles a day in the mornings and were in lock. In fact, we were all completely adamant about marching in lock because we all thought it was badass and tough to march at a specific beat. It's a traditional art, and is irrelevant on the modern battlefiend, however the disciple training is EXCEPTIONAL.

As such, I recommend requiring field marches, drills, and bayonet charge practice.
