You can answer most questions about America with two distinct events that occured via communist social engineering in the 1960s. The civil rights act and the hart-celler act.

We used to have fast electric passenger rail. We were once an early adopter and developer in rail technologies.

They don't North America has something like twice the amount of track that Europe does, we just use it for freight instead of passengers, because density is low. There's no point in catching a train if you just need to rent a car when you arrive at your destination anyway.

People act like it's some big conspiracy or it's about train hate or something - it's not. Cars are just more convenient in low population density nations.

This was all enabled by the car which was lobbied for by the auto industry. Many cities had street car networks before the car, but they were bought up and ran into the ground to make cars more appealing.

Yes they were but even if those cities had a robust railcar and subway system, you'd still need a car if you ever left the city. Given that like 98% of the continent is not-city by land area, a huge portion of the population is still going to be completely dependant on cars to do anything outside of maybe their daily commute.

If anyone who doesn't live in an urban core needs to own a car anyway, it's very questionable how worthwhile it is to design anything other than urban cores around not-cars.

Everyone's got somewhere to go anon. Please see the Daniel Penny case or basically any instance of public transportation in the US. They live in most urban centers and blight rail, busses, planes, etc. Normies call it black fatigue and it reached mainstream this year. Like people openly talk about this shit now.

Our cities are not walkable/traversable by public transport.
Aside from a few outliers like NYC and Boston, once you get to a population hub, life is pretty miserable without a car.
Even in those two cities, there are plenty of transit-starved areas that nobody worth listening to cares about.
Due to our love affair with the automobile, relatively young society, and rampant individualism, our cities are just too spread out. Meanwhile when in London or Paris, a lot of the time I just walk and don't even bother with the subway/metro/tube/underground.
Also, niggers.

Inter-city rail is an option. Europe, China, and Japan are all good examples.

And yes, there will always be a need for cars. Nobody is proposing we rip up the roads. However, having them as the primary mode of transportation is prohibitively expensive and inefficient.

There are alternatives to spending 3 hours a day in traffic.

I missed a relevant point: rail travel will get you to the city, but then you're fucked.
There are commuter rail systems that feed into USA cities that have a decent public transit system, but you're not going city-to-city via rail.

>Inter-city rail is an option. Europe, China, and Japan are all good examples.
At our current density, not it really isn't at least as a broadly applicable solution. You're listing places that range from 2x to 20x the human density.
There are places here where it could work, say, the Eastern seaboard of the United States and the southern Ontario to Quebec corridor in Canada - but eventually you circle back around to the same issue that if anyone living there ever wants to go anywhere else in the nation, they need a car.

The cost is pretty prohibitive too. Like, Boston's big dig was ruinously expensive and we're talking about doing something at much greater scale than that in order to service a fraction of the population an alternative means of transit when we already have something that works. I think that if more cities want to start zoning with future transit improvements in mind that'd be great, but I don't think it makes much sense to start ripping and tearing existing infrastructure to try to force that transition to happen.

Many large cities still do, and if you ignore the niggers and homeless people they're fairly convenient... but you're still ultimately limited to being stuck in whatever major city you get dropped off in.

Only 30% of the population of the US lives in cities with population of 100K+ (about 350 cities in the US), compared to about 50% that lives in cities between 10-100K (about 3100 cities in the US), and another 20% that lives in cities with fewer than 10K people (about 16.5K cities).

So ignoring your racism that has no bearing on the topic, pretty much any city of any size can have rail infrastructure if planned properly. Again, many cities you would consider small today, like mine of ~60,000 today, had this before the car.

Again, having choice in how you transit your city is possible if we make the right choices at the municipal level.

I doubt your city of 60,000 today was a population of 60,000 before the car, or that intracity rail would be nearly as feasible for transport of people in and out of and around the city center today as it was then.

I also suspect your city of 60,000 has a municipal bus system.

I would do this:
Firstly I would bulldoze every single suburb in the area.
Secondly I would build up the main city and make it denser.
Thirdly I would triple the length of the DC metro and halve the waiting times (double the trains, but due to increased track length / # of lines it's actually like 6 times the amount of trains)
then you can drive or whatever, the amount of people taking trains just went up like x50

Planes fly 600 miles per hour and cost the same, and gets you right to where you need to go. Most trips are at least 500-1500 miles in the US.

The alternative is Bus which is basically as effective as railroad.

More or less Railroad is an industrial era technology that's been rendered obsolete except for raw material (ore) transport.
