How do employers know if you have a college degree or not?
It's not like they ever ask to see your diplomas.
What's to keep me from just lying about my qualifications?
Is it even illegal to lie?

employers usually contract background checks to a third-party firm. they'll have access to the registrars desk at universities and verify attendance.

the best scam I've ever encountered with this is to find someone with the same or very similar name to you who attended a school you like and claim that.

they of course ask to see your diplomas, however you could of course make a fake diploma, they would very rarely if ever check with the university that you actually graduated, unless it's a high profile job where they do background checks, so it kind of depends on what sort of college degree and with what sort of company, if it's nuclear engineering and working at the government then yes of course they will check your diploma, if it's something like computer science to work at a startup in florida then they won't bother
