Taiwan is important because of TSMC. They are one of the only foundries in the world with certain EUV tech for making chips. This includes CPUs and GPUs (more important).

The entire crux is around AI and the hardware necessary to run it. China having the control over manufacturing of Nvidia chips and getting them (and able to restrict export to the West) would be catastrophic. You might think AI is gay but it's absolutely this generation's technology leap.
