>>507643965 (OP)A hobby of mine is reporting illegal rentals online.
I live in Sask, but I go on facebook marketplace and kijiji, largely in Ontario since that's where prime pickings are, and build up cases against lordlords renting rooms or using illegal basement suites.
I cross reference local legislation permits and also inspect listing photos and report anything I find to public health inspectors. Everything from wrong placement of windows, lack of separate meters, ventilation, etc. If it is slightly out of code, it's a report under a fake name and email.
I will also book times in the middle of the night for rentals and fail to show. I pretend to be a pajeet coming in on a flight at 4am and need a room to rent from a slumlord. I will also mirror ads and drop the price by half, sending random pajeets to rentals under the impression rent is half what it really is.
Finally, I look up property management groups that buy up family homes and leave negative reviews for their rentals under multiple accounts attached to different IPs. I have collected about 200 emails from lawyers threatening me.
I've probably cost Canadian landlords millions of dollars since I've been doing this since covid and each deficiency I report is a fine plus the lost rental income plus the cost to repair.
I do it for free, but it gives me joy.
