This was happening a year after the battle of Moscow, where Guderian and other generals wanted to retreat, but Hitler ordered them to stand and fight.
Hitler turned out to be right. Russian attack had spent all its force and petered out. Germans survived.
Hitler thought Stalingrad was repetition, so didn't allow any retreat or breakout.
But Russians were much stronger this time and Germans were crushed.
