Japan wanted to be 'western' and tried numerous times to colonize and genocide the Chinese only be to fought against by none other than the US. The only reason those military bases are there was because of the USSR because China was built up since the 90s using development loans and tech coming from, again, the US and even Japan. I hope they reject the bases they're expensive as sin and have outlived their purpose, once China nationalizes fully I can guarantee you the US is going to try and hand Japan off.
