The life span of carriers is about 50 years, yes.
Their reactors need refueling at about 20 year intervals and modernizing a huge fucking structure like that is probably expensive as hell, and at some point it's just not feasible. Also, 50 years is quite a long time, in which the warfare very probably undergoes several minor and major changes. It doesn't make much strategic sense to get hung up on equipment that is made to last longer, but maybe very, very outdated at its lifecycle.

Kinda like 9/11, the WTC towers were built with asbestos insulations and now that the laws had been changed after the danger of asbestos was involved - the towers being due to renovation and it would have been insanely expensive to do it all properly with the specialized equipment and specialists needed to properly renovate asbestos targets and dispose of it - it was far better to destroy the towers and collect the insurance funds.
So Lucky Larry realized that he could strike two birds with one stone, get his money out of the WTC towers AND help the global jewry by passing it off as a terrorist attack
