This is a good question and I've honestly never seen a decent explanation that's satisfied me even though I studied 20th century Britain during my A Levels. The impression I have is that it was mostly a product of lazy and conservative leadership, economic devasation due to WWII and blowing all the Marshall Aid money on gibs and the NHS so British industry never properly modernised after the war so things like building riveted cargo ships and digging out coal just slowly became more and more inefficient and unproductive.

Hard to answer this in a 4chan thread. It depends on how far you want to go back.

One place you might want to start is with the end of imperial preference or empire preference in terms of imports, exports, and tariffs. A topic that you'll notice stiff gets some discussion today. In short we (or rather the elites) decided to go for free trade and end imperial preference. At the start this did seem to be for the best, at least in a narrow monetary/economic sense.

Going back to very very recent history, post industrial decline, in the 1980s, there were a bunch of indsutries that were pretty much dead and a bunch of industries just taking off (tech finance etc) and those who chose the new growth industries did well and those who stuck with the declining ones... well they are still in decline. That fork in the road got baked into certain geographies and certain families.

When times are good people dont notice, but these days, after the GFC and Covid etc... the difference in paths is revealed.
