Vet here, and yes people do, and yes it's cringe. I just tell them thanks for paying their taxes. If anyone ever goes deeper than that I tell them what the Navy did to me and warn them that the military is the bad guy and they need to vote to shut down the standing armies our Constitution explicitly forbids.

Yes. It's only gay to say now because our military is gay.
We (correctly) believe that the military is what keeps America free and on top.
Back in the year 2000 we were all about being Americans and our military is the single most obvious source of American pride.

They do it to firemen.
They do it to EMT's.
