USA helped Jihadists back when the secular USSR was the biggest global rival. For USA Israel is a desperate country surrounded by enemies which is great for weapons testing, intel and other deals. USA wants the Middle East broken up so the small and somewhat easier to control Gulf Kingdoms keep playing ball with the global oil market (so they get to fix the price but still use petrodollars).

So there's tons of reasons. I don't think USA is as do or die married to Israel though. They don't want to upset the Gulf kingdoms too much so they rely a lot on the status quo but as an example Iran is the enemy of the Gulf kingdoms so it works in USA's favor to be extra hostile to Iran and their imperialism (which clashes with USA's imperalistic goals)
