It is what happened, Trump told Iran he wanted a new deal, really a new Obama style deal (which Iran themselves had suggested in years prior, saying that Trump leaving it was a bad thing). Trump had Witkoff as negotiator, who is a pushover because he has no experience in this at all.

Iran decided to drag negotiations out forever. Clearly they had no intention of ever making a 'deal' of any kind. They were happy to drag things out until one day they can turn around and say 'oh, we have a nuke now, sorry the ball's now in our court'.

Trump knew that's what was going on and that's why he gave them a 60 day deadline. Iran chose to ignore that deadline and now they're paying the price.
Keep in mind guys like John Bolton and other hawks were extremely harsh about Trump during the last 60 days in regards to Iran, saying that he's getting played by the Iranians, that they're going to drag negotiations out forever, etc
