That's the one thing everyone seems to actually be in agreement about. I'm just so sick of these forever wars in the sandbox. It was only a week ago that we had Mexican rioting and their government talking about wanting open war with us. Now people act like that never even happened. If we had to go to war with someone, we'd be much better served by finally dealing with Mexico than we ever would by getting involved in the middle east again.

I don't think they ever took into account just how disgruntled an entire generation of veterans is. I did an enlistment, a lifetime ago. Since then, every time I've encountered a bright eyed young man who talks about thinking about joining the military, I've told them about my time in service. They always listen, because why wouldn't they listen to a veteran? They plan on going in afterall, they crave hearing about what it's like. So I tell them.
I tell them about all the horrible times they can't anticipate; the days of your life wasted as you clean a single area on a wall for 6 hours a day, sitting around doing nothing, bureaucracy, office politicking and backstabbing, lack of sleep leading to insomnia, alcoholism, severe depression, and even suicidal tendencies. I tell them about all of it. I can't in good conscience let someone join without hearing what they're truly getting into.
I'm not alone in this either. My stories from my time in are far from unique. In fact, they've become quite common and that's part of the problem. There are millions and millions of veterans from the past 20 years now and we all have these horror stories to one degree or another.
Even if, and it's a mighty big if, the country's politics were in perfect alignment with your own and you supported everything happening, the military is different. It will hate you. It will try to ruin you and it will do it without even knowing who you are. As it stands, I don't support anyone joining the military in its current state, regardless of what the country's overall condition is.
Zoomers didn't have to just look at what happened to us, we went out of our way to warn them. Afterall, I still remember what it was like to once be a young idealist that thought he could actually make a difference.
