So long as it allows you to venerate and peer into the life of Christ, and love him as appropriate, it is a good icon.

Is it incorrect? If following the ideology of Icons, absolutely not. Icons in the Byzantine tradition aren't concerned about portraying the figures accurately, but as representations. It's as accurate as European Jesus.
Christians that died for their faith, loved Christ, used this image to strengthen their resolve and faced martyrdom for the faith. The purpose of Icons are to bring us closer to Christ. That's all. Going any further IS idolatry. The wood and paint are not themselves Holy, but that which it depicts is.
Any Icon depicting Christ, the Theotokos, or a Saint is Holy, because of what they depict, not the style.
