2001 is what I consider the end of the American golden age. Literally 9/11 was the straw the broke the camel's back and tipped us into a prolonged and irreversible state of decline.

American society and culture probably peaked near the turn of the in the late 19th and early 20th century. That's true of practically every Western country though and really its all due to the tragedy of World War 1. It broke the old civilization and cleared the way for what we see today to be built from the ashes.
