Japan was like China back then being cheap factory bugs producing stuff for Americans to consume and while they had not much indigenous technology at the beginning they learned with the time to make first cheap copies of western products and then after some time got enough knowledge to produce their very own high quality stuff.

Japan adopted the American way of philosophy and way of life. They adopted it so well that they became better at it than Americans; which is why Japan (socially) jumped ahead. As of now, Japan is about 20 years ahead (culturally) to the US; which is bad news if you see what's happening to Japan
