GO
TO
A
SUPPORT
GROUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>But I don't want to... too shameful!
VERY hard to do it by yourself (but possible).
You can't do it cold turkey.
You have to wane yourself off it.
Build self control.
Do you have a drink in front of you now?
Practice by repeatedly grabbing it with your hand as if to drink it, then stop yourself.
Put it somewhere else.
Then repeat. Practice by grabbing it again, then stopping yourself again.
Eventually you will build up the ability to control your habit.
But trust me a support group is way easier. Also, you WILL relapse. Don't get yourself down too hard about it. Just quit again.

If you are a legitimate alcoholic (there is a tendency to overstate this among people) then you need to get yourself off it slowly but surely. Use assistance and whatever help you can get, it’s a case of whatever works. If you’re just drinking too much then it is quite literally a case of doing it less. I enjoy a few drinks every now and again but that’s about it. Haven’t been drunk in years and haven’t thrown up in decades. I have known maybe five legitimate alcoholics in my time, the rest were just heavy drinkers. There is a difference and you’ll know, deep down, if you’re one or the other

Once you have a fatty liver it really does become “never again”
I used to drink like a fish, but then I was exposed to a nasty liver toxin at work, and it aged my liver a solid 15 years of heavy drinking.

When you can’t process it like you used to it loses all of its appeal. But your brain still thinks it’s like the olden days and keeps wanting to try.
Alcoholism to the point of liver disease is no fucking joke. It can and will kill you, as it has done to many men

That's literally all it takes.
Don't focus on not buying alcohol, focus on not going to the store. Make it inconvenient as fuck - a recovering alco friend of mine used to get into his Pj's as soon as he got home from work, not just because that's comfy as fuck but because it made going to the store to get alcohol a pain in the ass.

Just have one less drink. You're fine.
When the night is ending and you are cracking another one out of habit. Just have a water instead of that last drink. That's all it takes. You can still be hammered and shitfaced and have all that fun, but when it's over, when it's time, just have one less than you would have had that night.
That's all it takes.

I honestly have a hard time understanding how people even drink. I like to socially drink, but I do it despite the horrid taste, and then only to a buzz. I couldn't and can't imagine what joy you're getting from drinking alone.

Recovering alcoholic here; if you've been drinking a lot for a while then it's potentially fatal to go cold turkey, I know, was in hospital for 2 weeks having seizures then had complete psychosis with delirium tremens. Try getting a short-term benzo script from your GP but if it's been a long time then consider a proper drying-out clinic, I went after the DTs cleared up and it was a lot more productive than just 'man up faggit' which often results in one simply relapsing when the withdrawal becomes too difficult. 8 years sober now, from a crippling addiction that blighted everything good in my life.

This. Socialising in pubs becomes impossible because after people have a few pints they become incomprehensible and boring if you're sitting there completely sober. It's a sacrifice but a necessary one.

I stopped cold turkey and the thing that really keeps me from drinking is going to the gym. I am an advanced to elite level lifter and dont want to lose my gains and get body fat. I also dont want to lose my cardio gains. The issue when I start drinking is that I stop going to the gym and just get fat and lazy. The key is to find something more important to yiu than being drunk all day.

Been there. What I did was figure out WHY, I was drinking alcohol. Alcohol isn't the problem, it's the solution to a problem. What is that problem? Why do you drink alcohol? Get to the whiteboard and figure it out, and figure out how to solve that problem, and you won't feel the desire to drink.

Embrace the suck. If you are still drinking then you haven't hit rock bottom, so you'll probably keep drinking despite anyone's advice here. Thinkgs will get suckier, you get to a point where you know deep inside that either you stop drinking or the depression will consume you. This is a different type of depression, it hits your soul, your stomach feels hollow. That feeling of despair is so strong that it can completely override your desire to get drunk.
I've been sober for 3 years, not a drop, not a single desire. Even if I think about alcohol I get feelings of despair as soon as I do.
