The amount of shit the defense was prohibited from even mentioning in front of the jury boggles the mind and the second trial was chock full of the state objecting to and successfully shutting down just about every line of questioning the defense brought up cross while having all their objections overruled when the state was obviously leading the fuck out of the witness on direct. Also there's an active FBI investigation into all those cops and has been since the first trial ended. You have to realize that the testimony was offered in the context of the data and theory supplied by the state and its experts. The state was who was claiming O'Keefe was hit at 27mph+ because that's the kind of speed you'd need to get a basal skull fracture of that severity on frozen grass or flat asphalt. The problem is the damage to the car is inconsistent with a 27mph+ collision and moreover his bodily injuries are wildly inconsistent with a 27mph+ collision. The xrays that were educed at the end of trial were a bit of a surprise to everyone because the state strongly implied to such xrays were ever taken of O'Keefe so the status of his shoulders, arms and torso were unknown. Turns out xrays were taken showing zero connective tissue or bone fractures, both of which would be expected in a collision at those speeds. In addition there was no bruising whatsoever seen in the photos or noted by the forensic pathologist at autopsy. If he were alive before and during the hit he would experience significant bruising to the body parts making contact with the vehicle. There are a ton of reasons why those experts were so confidant in saying he wasn't hit by a car at speed.

This is pretty much all untrue. The first thing to remember is that this all started at the beginning of a blizzard that carried on throughout the entire day. The circumstances were extreme. The State Police's Search and Rescue team was deployed THAT evening and uncovered pieces of taillight within about half an hour. This team is not connected with the Norfolk County detectives and handles searches throughout the entire state. Read's impounded SUV is arriving at the station at roughly the same time leaving no room to plant evidence. More evidence was gathered as the snow began to melt.
