How Americans feel about draft dodgers?

Apparently many veterans hate John Wayne because he was a draft dodger during WW2. Isn't that based though, not dying for the zog empire? Also why does it matter if it an actor goes to war or not?

He was 34 when Pearl Harbor happened. He was 35 only a couple more months after that and couldn't have been drafted at that point. The Duke was too old then.
