Just FYI, in the American criminal justice system people aren't "proven innocent". Its different from the Netherlands and most European countries, because the judge is entirely neutral and just oversees the trial, the prosecutor is not a judge. Its entirely up to the prosecutor to prove that you are guilty, the ultimate question is not about discovering what actually happened, but rather whether the prosecutor was able to prove you were guilty. So just being found "not guilty" doesn't mean you didn't do it, but rather the prosecution was not able to prove that you did.

In my country you can be locked up for 9 months without trail, without any reperations, or reporcussions for those that do. They can just lock you up for 9 months, then there must be a trail, can be obviously obviously not guilty, then you are not guilty, and can go on again. 9 months gone.

they had a bad breakup, the doctor had access to the drugs used to put her out and didn't have a solid alibi, but the court judged him not guilty in the first instance because the prosecutor couldn't prove his involvement in any way
the woman admitted she can't remember her attacker, they couldn't prove he stole the drugs, the summonned witnesses couldn't prove he was at her house, they couldn't verify the woman's claim that he was stalking her after the breakup

then lefty media found out that the doctor was a prominent member of a local church so they ran the story every day for months, treating the man's guilt as a foregone conclusion
and voila, in the second instance he was found guilty and got sentenced to nine years despite the fact that no new evidence was introduced

i'm just reading up on the case, the prosecutor's arguments in the second instance were laughable
the questioned neighbors didn't hear the woman's dog barking during the night of the attack, he argued that this was because the dog knew the doctor, stuff like that

Its supposed to work like this, but it's closer to needing to prove your innocence. Judges have personal relationships with DAs, and they're often good friends. I've been through the system and its honestly terrifying what a judge will let pass (especially in a smaller town) because they know the guy.

Also most places that require a security clearance, or works with children/elderly or even really any place that does a background check, will likely see this charge and assume guilt even if you were found innocent. You'd have to prove to them that you're 100% guilt free, and even then they might toss you out because they won't want to work with someone that's unlucky.

Most countries have an "inquisitorial" system, where the judge is actively involved in the questioning of witnesses, and the trial is meant to be a "search for truth" which in reality means the accused has to prove their innocence. The US has an "adversarial" system where the court is neutral and the defense and prosecution are equal adversaries in front of the judge who just oversees the procedures of the court. The trial is not a search for truth, but rather an exercise in whether the prosecution has met the burden of proving beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty. It is a fundamental difference.

In the US a defendant can win a trial without even putting forward a case at all.
