Lots of shitty PHPBB forums with faggot moderators, warez and free mp3 websites with 50 trojans per download, people unironically using Perl CGI, boomer homepages in colors that made your eyes bleed, Lovesan, pseudointellectual faggots writing longform tripe in Livejournal, eDonkey/Kazaa/Limewire, silly flash games galore, SQL injection by typo, mediocre porn TGPs, cheese pizza in clearnet, ICQ and AIM, Nigerian royalty in distress, hot singles in your area.

there also used to be a shitload of porn that the modern porn sites deleted because uploaders needed to be verified.
like 80% of porn made before 2016 is missing off the internet, it's demoralizing that such a wipeout could occur for any media for any reason so long as kooky kikes and insane leftists would scream about something being wrong. literal book burning faggotry.

You needed an extra HOME PHONE line to get on the internet, and if someone picked up the phone you were kicked off the internet. I remember getting in huge fights with my sister who wanted to call her friends and I wanted to play Everquest. I donโ€™t even know how we found out about new websites. There were lots of flash games that were fun. AIM and AOL chat rooms were wild. There was a major fear of never putting any personal information or credit card information over the internet. Games were awesome and you never felt bad sinking hours into them.

Organic. Memes, websites, games, and services spread by merit rather than by algorithms and bots. Online resources had to be genuinely informative and useful for people to use them. Schizos, groomers, faggots, and trolls were easier to spot because the internet hadn't been flooded with retards yet.

We shall not see its like again.

It's not unlike a lot of sites on Tor nowadays. It wasn't better in term of usability but the people were more genuine due to the lack of social media jewery. You could say some wild shit on really any forum and there was no Xitter for it to be posted on. You'd probably get banned but there weren't social media jannies launching coordinated bans like today. There weren't a fuck ton of NORPs fagging things up, it was nice. Myspace was the beginning of the end.

There was so much modding in the communities and so many variations to play a game. Things like dota and tower defense came out of that. I don't see any of that anymore. You just get matchmaking slop now.

It went from libertarian to rightwing over oogabunga, then the stormfags came and all the ironic hitlerposting turned unironic. Now its like night and day, its payed actors yelling at payed actors over shit they dont even believe. /v/ and /tv/ have literal advertiser's making threads. /biz/ is just jeets trying to scam people with shitcoins... idk, everynow and then you get threads like this with real people but they are few and far between, even though this is a 1pbtid spambot thread lol

Speaking as an europoor it was cool until about 2010 when Ukrainians and Russians joined the servers, but beyond that games were more unforgiving so the people with lower cognitive abilities were forced to remain in their domain.. In today's games everybody is supposed to feel like a winner so it is just one massive gay nerf arena.

Governments and big media didn't really cared about it. It was considered something for nerds, losers and perverts.
Every once in a while the news talked about how someone got kidnapped and killed for chatting with a stranger on the internet, they always tried to make it seem like something dangerous and scary to keep people away from it. Most of the internet was small forums that you had to find on your own since most search engines sucked at the time. The best ones were Yahoo and Altavista. Everyone used gifs because videos took way too long to download.
4chan had like 5 or 6 boards when I first found it and people used to post CP and gore on /b/ all the time to scare newfags like me away, it didn't really work as you can see. The CP threads lasted for days because 4chan didn't have much traffic back then and no one gave a shit.

It's so weird, that everything is connected all the time. Before if you were looking for information you were grabbing your encarta CD-ROM. If you couldn't find it though.... Sigh, fire up the modem.
Go make some coffee. If you couldn't find it on the internet it's down to the library and to have a talk with your librarian to maybe find what you need.
If my cell phone goes off wifi it automatically connects to cell network. If it can't find the network it will roam on someone else's cell network. We're always connected. Sometimes I just shut down all the computers because 1. My PC runs hot as shit 2. I don't like being connected all the time.
