I’ll never forget there were random people in the room (not doctors. Some kind of researchers) who came in shortly after delivery and were literally complimenting the placenta “wow, this one is big. We’ll get a lot from this one”.

After I voiced that the the umbilical cord is to NOT be clamped until I give the go - I could SEE the anger and confusion on the doctor and researchers faces.

My wife had a terrible bleed from delivery. Literally terrible, blood was gushing from her. One of the nurses was extremely distressed and called for the Doctor’s attention. I could tell it was bad because the doctors was talking out loud and to herself, almost as if to keep me (and my wife) calm. Saying things like “Okay, there’s some bleeding but it’s okay. We’re going to stop the bleeding. Okay, Mommy is bleeding a lot here please hand me X”.

After hearing the distress in the nurse’s voice, and the concern from the Doctor. I put the baby down to observe (from a non-intrusive distance) my wife, I stepped to her side and held her hand. She asked if it was bad, and I said “No, it’s okay. The baby is healthy. They’re just stitching you up”.

During this time, one of the “researchers” had clamped the placenta and they were encouraging me to cut the cord (I figure that THEY legally can’t. One of the parents have to). At the time I REALLY wanted to protest and tell them to unclamp it, but I was more concerned for my wife and just cut the cord. And the moment I did, they literally teleported out of the room with the placenta. Like, they were LITERALLY out of the room in the time it took me to blink and turn back towards my wife.

All of this is to say, PROTECT THE PLACENTA! THEY WILL CLAMP IT EARLY!

this is a real thing, and we delayed clamping until it turned grey. they had someone come in afterwards because we said we would donate the rest of the cord. when we told her we delayed clamping, her face changed immediately, and she left the room very soon after looking upset
