From my understanding, I thought Stalin's regime was just terrible at keeping everyone fed during the collectivization/nationalization of farms, and during the famine he took the farms from the kulaks in addition to redirecting food to the more populous parts of Russia away from less populated areas (Kazachstan, Ukraine), leading to those areas having the worst impacts and the most important areas being less affected. I can definitely see kulaks being upset at having everything they had being stolen from them and basically destroying their own farms in response, seems like an exceptionally Russian thing to do.
