>>507975200They were asked to multiple times by the US and rioted in response because their constitution (also written by the US) says that war is bad. The CIA created the LDP to promote 'ultranationalism' and get Japan to start supporting remilitarization, but they rioted against amending article 9 and instead forced the US to build bases there. The US literally put almost every officer in the IJA into a position of power and it still wasn't enough to get them to want to remilitarize, the bases are only there because they literally demanded the US foot their military. Look up the Anpo protests.
>The protests in 1959 and 1960 were staged in opposition to a 1960 revision of the original 1952 Security Treaty, and eventually grew to become the largest popular protests in Japan's modern era.[1] >Revision of the treatyThey had 8 years since the alliance was signed and the bases were there, and when the US says they wanted revise article 9 (which would let them have their own military) they chimp out. The only thing appealing about Japan is that their government does nothing but public works and doesn't finance defense much at all, it's functionally a welfare state.
