Since the mid 90s' of the last century a technology has been in design to control massive populations through computer banks in a way that turns governing into a computer game that crosses 4x strategy gaming like 'Civilization' with individual management like 'Sims'.
All of earth's population has been infected with nano particles that are capable of self assembly. Those nano particles carried by the air infect the soil and the water and once with in our bodies they self assemble into nanobots and self replicate using the constant stream of nano particles in our bodies and become the operating system of our bodies.
This technology can inject thoughts into our minds without us noticing those thoughts are not ours and in people with strong spirits capable of noticing and learning about this technology the artificial intelligence of the computer bank can turn against them causing a state of delirium tailored to break down the individual mind of the target.
