In the past enemy combatants honored their enemies fallen in battle. Alexander the Great ordered the killer of his great rival, Darius III, to be tortured and executed. Miguel Grau took the sword of enemy captain Arturo Prat and sent it to her widow, along with a handwritten letter expressing his condolences. The red baron was given a full military funeral by Australian soldiers after his body was found.
Nowadays we see soldiers disrespecting the dead, mocking enemy combatants, taunting and showing no respect for those valiant enough to put their life on the line. I can think of countless examples of abuses in Abu Ghraib, Bucha and Lebanon, just to name a few.
This has taken out all the honor and appeal that war ever had, thus making it a very gay affair. What changed?
