The native Americans are able to enjoy traditional and cultural psychedelic use legally, why can't a normal person also enjoy a traditional sassofrass root beer legally if everyone else is smoking marijuana "legally" now anyway?

Sassafras is one of the very few naturally occurring chemicals that has been conclusively proven to increase the risk of cancer.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safrole#Toxicity

You can separate the safrole from sassafras extract but that makes it very expensive.

I have about 4 jars of dried sassafras root in my cabinet right now and about 80 seedlings marked in my woods. I have a few jars of rabbit tobacco leaves and flowers, a few jars of eastern red cedar dried juniper berries. And a jar of dried wild hibiscus. The problem with root beer is that you make it and you basically have to drink it within a few days you cannot easily bottle it.

Anyways, I mostly just like the smell of the sassafras leaves and roots. I keep a sassafras tree right as you go out my back door so I can ripboff a few leaves and crush them up and stick them in my shirt pocket. In my experience sassafras is not a long lived hardwood type tree. They are plentiful but they grow more like a shrub. They get about 15 feet tall and the tops break out and then they die. The tea is fine but nothing special but the aroma is probably the best in the woods next to maybe like sweet shrub and eastern red cedar. By far the most useful of the wild herbs/spices is wild red bay and the juniper berries.

The sassafras is apparently carcinogenic but not a potent carcinogen so to speak. My understanding is that it takes considerable quantities for the cancer risk to manifest but idk. Shit its not like I'm drinking the teas every day.

At any rate it IS a fascinating tree. Interesting aroma. Good fall color, and the variable 1,2, and 3 lobed leaves are interesting from a plant perspective very few other trees have variation like that.

Sarsparilla is not the same as Sassafras. The tree you are talking about with variable leaves is Sassafras and it is the original root beer flavor. They swapped to sarsparilla root once they claimed sacrilege was carcinogenic.

Anyways it is an easily identifiable tree and it is common and can be found readily compared to many other fragrant or useful plants that are uncommon or have to be searched for.

Sure you could dig up a few roots and then prune some major branches back and it would probably live but it will stunt it.. but they arent long lived trees generally anyways and they are super common so I'd just pick one about 3-4 feet tall and pull it up.

I realize. But a lot of even simple reagents are strictly controlled. I have looked this up before I do think most pathways still require certain chems that you can't get, like methylamine. I think from hexanes would be pretty involved lol. IIRC most chemicals that chemists use to make drugs at companies, even very advanced reagents, still begin their journey as petrochemicals side products. I could be mistaken though.

I studied natural products for a couple of years. And I distinctly remember learning about combinatorial synthesis and how it failed to find anything good. They went back to nature actually.

sassafras like many plants produce toxins as a defense mechanism when harvested and those chemicals convert to carcinogens when they dry.
You must use fresh from young plants! the studies were done on old dried roots, the same study could be done on a potato and you'd get wildly toxic results.

Sarsparilla is the temu sassafras. Its what they swapped to after they banned safrole.

>>508008174
Eh, its been so long since I didn't know every plant in the woods I forget the feeling. But geberally there are only about a dozen seriously deadly poisonous plants in the woods. If you know what to stay away from you'll probably be OK in small quantities. Don't eat anything in the pea family. Stay away from the fennel/parsely family. Stay away from the Bella Donnas obviously. Monks hood, rosary pea, etc etc.

Alot of the more useful plants have no look alikes practically speaking and are very distinctive. Rabbit tobacco is unmistakable. Brambles, persimmons, maypop, Hawthorn, plums, vaccinium, crabapples, etc. are all completely obvious and distinctive. Wild grap has a poisonous look alike (moonseed) but it is rare here and I've never come across it and eat wild grapes by the pound. Winged sumac berries have a few poisonous cousins and amateurs shouldn't eat them but to anyone who isnt a newb winged sumac is extremely distinctive. Sassafras is super distinctive.

Here is a little-known native but distinctive plant that has a sassafras flavor as well that no one ever talks about- candyroot.

AI Overview
+9
Root beer, and certain other beverages, may carry a cancer warning label in California due to the presence of safrole, a chemical that was previously banned in food due to potential carcinogenicity. While most commercial root beers use artificial sassafras flavoring to avoid this, some still utilize a safrole-free sassafras extract. California's Proposition 65 requires businesses to warn consumers about potential exposure to chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects, and this includes some root beer products.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
Safrole and Root Beer:
Safrole, a component of sassafras, was identified as a carcinogen and banned by the FDA in 1960. While most root beer brands use artificial flavoring, some use safrole-free sassafras extract.

I've seen them wild on the Congaree river here in SCโ€”in a pretty urban area no less. I understand that on the other side of the Appalachians, the Ohio River valley is ate up with them and also on the Mississippi River floodplain they are quite common.
I've got 4 or so planted paw paws myself, They are kind of a pain in the ass to get started but they do well after they grow up a bit. I planted two at my mom's house about 18 years ago and they do quite well, but it is the north side of her house and they were shaded heavy when they were young but get more or less full sun now that they are tall.
I also think american persimmon is a must have tree. Fresh fruit in the winter and they taste better than the asian variety imo.
