First of all, you know there are uses for guns other than shooting people, right? There are all kinds of sporting uses, target shooting and hunting, there's pest control and wildlife protection, etc. Secondly just having a gun is enough to deter a crime in many cases, I have personally been in that situation, cops responded, heard the full story and saw the gun, I didn't get in any kind of trouble even though I was in fucking Los Angeles at the time. Thirdly there are hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of defensive gun uses a year in the US, and only a tiny handful ever make the news or lead to any kind of legal repercussions for the user, there's like a 99.999% chance the worst thing that'll happen to you in a legit defensive shooting is that they'll take the gun into evidence before deciding not to press charges unless you're in a place with a completely insane DA.

I kinda know your pain with the handguns, I was stuck in California for years and they've got a stupid and very limited "roster" of approved handguns. They finally just made it possible to add new guns last year and now they're starting to get some decent options, but for years there were like 5 guns to choose from, all of which were 20+ year old models. Moving to a state with the full range was wild, sadly it seems like I got here just in time for the laws to start going to hell here too. (10 round mag limit, mandatory expensive class and 60 day wait before you can buy a gun, etc.)

Mini-14 honestly isn't a horrible choice for CA. The newer ones have mostly fixed the accuracy issues and it's featureless by default so you don't have to deal with retarded ergonomics or a maglock. I also like the Ruger PCCs if you're in an area where 200+ yard shots aren't a concern and you can get the cool Magpul takedown stock for them.

Because they're so gimped there. I tried a bunch of featureless grips and hated them all, and a mag lock with a 10 round mag isn't a great alternative either. If he'd just said he wanted a range toy and HD rifle I'd probably lean toward the AR despite those things, but he specifically said SHTF and I wouldn't want to be struggling with the ergos or with a mag lock in that situation.

F-150s are everywhere here, I really like my Ranger though and will probably buy the new gen when I'm ready for a new truck. People love to shit on them but they're like 10 grand cheaper in my region, where F-150s don't get huge discounts like they do in the Midwest, and the smaller size is really convenient, like I can still get my motorcycle out of the garage with the truck in the driveway, don't have to do 3 point turns in and out of parking spaces, etc. I just wish Ford would release that 6ft bed version that they were spotted testing a while back.

You can actually buy a full auto MG42 with a class 3 license which is kind of a pain in the ass to get; but not impossible.

The bigger issue is that the current laws only allow for fully automatic guns that were manufactured before 1985 or so to be sold because they were grandfathered in before they outlawed new full autos. So buying a full auto tends to be very expensive because the ones that are grandfathered in are in limited supply.
