I don't know why anybody would expect it to work in anything but the most limited circumstances. You're trying to hit missiles with missiles, like deflecting a bullet by hitting it with a separate bullet. I'm sure the tech is super advanced or whatever, but that's just sure to fail a significant portion of the time. If that's your defense plan you shouldn't rely on it too much.
