I'm referring to the pre-Slavic natives of the Balkans. Thracians, Dacians, etc... totally unremarkable people who never had empires or even written languages of their own. I have no clue why some Bulgarians choose to larp as them, considering that studies keep coming out indicating little genetic continuity between Iron Age Thracians and modern Bulgarians. That's not to say that Bulgarians don't have pre-Slavic ancestry, they do, but it mostly comes from Romanized Anatolians who resettled the Eastern Balkans during late antiquity/the early middle ages.

The Slavs did have empires, a great deal of them. The two Bulgarian empires, the Serbian empire, the Russian empire, Kievan Rus' arguably was an empire, etc... And Cyrillic isn't a "greco-roman" writing system, it was developed in northeastern Bulgaria during the 9th century. Yes it ultimately derives from the Greek alphabet, but the Greek alphabet derives from the Phoenician one, which in turn derives from Egyptian hieroglyphics.
