For six years, I worked the overnight shift as a cashier at a gas station convenience store in New York City. In the wee hours of the night in the summer months, there would always be a group of young men hanging outside the store, just casually hanging out, but smoking pot. There were cameras all over the station and store, and my boss insisted that I call the police immediately if I could see and smell that they were smoking pot. So that's what I did.

Some nights it was white young men. Other nights it was black young men.

One single police car would arrive. The cops would always do the same thing. They drive up to the group of young men and, without getting out of the car, they order them to leave.

When the cops told them to leave, they were already in the process of leaving and saying as much to the cops. Within minutes, cars would drive away and the station was empty. Cops never even got out of their vehicle.

When the black guys saw the police car pull into the station, they would immediately begin barking, their body language was aggressive. As the police car pulled up to them, the blacks would slowly surround the vehicle. The cops would ask them to leave. The blacks would get loud and argue. Cops would get out of the vehicle. They start grabbing the loudest and most aggressive blacks, ordering them to put their hands up against the wall, frisking them. The friends of the blacks who were not yet being frisked would get so loud that the cops would call for backup. The frisking led to the discovery of drugs and weapons, which led to arrests. The backup cops would arrive, more frisking, more resistance, more arrests.

Life is far easier when you act with civility and respect. When you act like subhuman, you get treated like a subhuman. No doubt that Indiana woman got loud with the manager of the "All You Can Eat" and loud with cops.
